Investing in timeless classics

Updated: Dec 13, 2020

I can certainly say it's been a hot minute since I've done a post, and there's a decent amount of things to catch up on. As you can see from the title this post will mostly surround the topic of investing in timeless classics that you plan to keep and that will stand the test of time.

With how this year has been going it's been a bit of a wake-up call on impulse purchases and frivolous spending. Now I'm not saying I'm not going to buy anything or that I'm a completely different person but I have a different view on purchasing fashion pieces and high-end brands.

Since getting into investing in higher end pieces I've been a little more on the more is more train, but that doesn't do anyone any good. Buying things I didn't need and ultimately didn't want but thought that I did. All in all a bit of a waste of money, especially because fashion is like cars, once you leave the lot (or store) the item diminishes in value. Unless you have purchased one of the few items that actually goes up in value like pieces from Chanel or Hermes.

Out of all of my impulse purchases I have one that I do not regret every time I look at it and that is my Louis Vuitton Speedy, but why? Because that piece is both timeless and classic, it's something I plan to hold on to and have no intention of selling. I'm not saying I regret all of my high end purchases but some of them I could have done without and that money could have gone towards something else. You buy an item imagining you wearing it but you also have to think about how it fits into your lifestyle now and how it will in the future.

Because I have made the choice to invest in timeless classics only for the most part I have created goals and milestones that would be good times to get the items as well as estimated timelines. This helps me to make these realistic and actually reachable goals.

In terms of the goals it would mean saving 2-3 times the amount required for the item that way I would still have some left over to continue to my next goal. This is a great way to make sure you don't blow all your money on something and have nothing left over. As for milestones it would mean things like completing school or reaching a certain amount of followers on a social media platform. This all helps to break up the purchasing of the items so its not something you can get whenever you want but because you have had to work towards it it creates a greater appreciation for the items you have invested in.

Now, what are some of these timeless and classic investment pieces you must be asking? Some big ones out there are the LV Neverfull and the LV Speedy as well as the Chanel Classic Flap. But those aren't the only ones, they just have a much bigger hype than some of the most classic pieces in the fashion world one of which is the Burberry Trench which has been around for ages. It's a multi purpose piece for dressing up and dressing down, and a down right gorgeous staple piece. It can be seen being worn by people like Kate Middleton as well as fashion bloggers like Alyssa Lenore.

A pair of classic simple pumps is also a great way to go because A) they go with so many things and also you can wear them so much and even have them fixed until the point where you have to replace them. A good pair of shoes goes a long way. Some of the currently trending ones are the Gianvito Rossi Plexi pumps, a simple silhouette in a multitude of colors and textures and the Manolo Blahnik Hangisi pumps made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City.

That's just a handful of them but there are far more, what's a great way to see whats still staying strong and has been around for a long time? Well do some sleuthing into what was around in the time of Audrey Hepburn and Princess Diana, and see what some of the biggest fashion icons of their time were wearing and you'll be surprised to see that they had certain items that they wore over and over again that are still big today.

But with all that being said, when purchasing more expensive items try to break them up with milestones, birthdays or goals and try to think about things that you could see as a staple in your wardrobe that you will wear over and over again; making a list can help too!

You can look forward to another post later in the week that will cover the topic of buying items for the sake of reselling them, purchasing pre-owned items, the reselling market and items that hold their value versus ones that don't.

Thanks for the read!
