We spend so much money on our fine jewelry, so of course the most important thing is remembering to look after the things we spend our hard earned cash on.
I've been collecting Jewelry for at least 5 years now, and while I may not have known how to care for my pieces then I've learned over time thanks to the companies and businesses I have purchased from.
You know that little card your 18 karat ring came with? Yeah that! Don't just throw it away, keep it and store it with the other ones that came with your pieces. Brands like Leah Alexandra Jewelry ( a Vancouver business and long time favourite of mine) and Poppy Finch (another Vancouver brand) come with the cutest little cards, talking about how to care for your special pieces.
But who gives some of the best advice on how to care for your pieces? Your local jewelry stores like Violette Boutique! Here are some things to remember when caring for your jewelry pieces and little goodies:
Take off your jewelry when you go to the gym! We know you like to look cute while working out, whether it's for you or your gym crush but take care of those pieces and take them all off before your workout.
Remove your jewelry before showering or entering bodies of water, (yes that means leave your cute little earrings at home when you plan to go swimming with the girls at the beach or have a boat day!)
Store in a closed padded place, (Violette Boutique for one sells some beautiful jewelry cases from Leah Alexandra that are meant to look after your pieces.)
Bring a travel case when you travel with your jewelry! This is very important in caring for your jewelry and ensuring it doesn't get tangled.
Now another question you may be wondering is where can you take your jewelry to be cleaned and can you clean your jewelry at home? 100% you can clean it at home, but keep in mind that the cleaning process will change whether your items are gold fill or solid gold, and you can reach out to local jewelry stores to inquire if they offer complimentary cleaning services. I used to get my rings cleaned at People's Jewellers when they were located in the Bay Centre in downtown Victoria and my rings were beautiful and sparkly afterwards... it made them feel brand new.
One extremely important thing to remember that is not on the traditional jewelry care lists is a biggie in my mind and is probably one of the most important things.
Insure your jewelry!! This is extremely important, should anything ever happen to your pieces (I hope that nothing ever does but it is good to be prepared) having your pieces appraised and insured is super important for your peace of mind and your money. You've spent lots of money on these items so heck yes they are investments, and we definitely don't want to lose them!
What do you do to care for your jewelry?
