Shop local, volume 1: Habit Coffee

Hello and welcome back to another week during COVID-19! This is my first post featuring a local business and today I wanted to start it off with one of my family's favourite places, Habit Coffee. My family has been going to Habit since they first opened at their China Town location on Pandora Avenue.

We don't know what is going on behind the doors of many of these businesses with the new regulations that have arisen due to COVID-19 but they have come up with other ways to serve their customers and give them the things they love. For my mom and I Habit has always been a place we would meet for a coffee and a croissant. Today we went by to their window at their Atrium location to pick up a latte and a cappuccino to go.

Just the ability to still have their coffee is amazing and gives a sense of hope for our local businesses. Habit opened for window service this past Friday at their Atrium location. Today Shane Devereaux, owner of Habit Coffee and Sherwood Cafe & Bar was at the window serving us, and kindly obliged when I asked if I could get a photo of him.

Before opening for window service Shane and his daughter came up with a way to distribute their 400 lbs of leftover coffee from when they closed their doors due to COVID-19 when all non-essential businesses were told to close. They had sold 300 bags of coffee in just 8 hours, raising over $5000 for their staff.

My mom was lucky to secure two bags of beans which were delivered to our front door by one of Habit's staff members Jacob, it was so nice to see a friendly face while receiving that delivery and again today when we went to pick up our fresh coffee.

With new things in place to encourage social distancing like painted footprints on their patio and their window service with tap only payment and a window separating the customer from the staff we are lucky to be able to visit Habit Coffee again and have the ability to continue supporting a local business.

Head on over to habit for a selection of baked goods, coffee and friendly faces. They are currently open 9-4 seven days a week for window service at their Atrium location at 808 Yates Street. Their hours of operation may change but you can stay up to date through their Instagram! @habitcoffee
